Honoring Cognitive Diversity

The basic premise of this presentation is that most of the significant differences that exist within us as learners are invisible to the naked idea. Furthermore, the complex neurological profiles that are present in our classrooms are often misunderstood or overlooked by the misguided lens of "normal".

Each student basically became an expert on how their brain learns best and specifically the criteria used for their individual diagnosis from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM IV); the title of the manual itself brought forth a healthy and thoughtful discussion which only intensified when we examined the specific sections of criteria for Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorders, Asperger's Syndrome and non-verbal learning disorders.

The response from parents, teachers and school administrators during our presentations has been extremely positive and has led to other opportunities for the students to share their ideas and strategies.
